Before the heyday of television serials for the movies were the very preamble of the first series for the small screen. They were shown weekly in the morning session on Saturday (the famous "Matin") and consisted of fifteen episodes approximately, each of which lasted just under twenty minutes. The most remembered of these old serials is certainly the final "cliffhanger" of each episode, in which the protagonist or one of the main characters in the cast of the serial was facing a serious danger he apparently lost his life .. . At the beginning of the next episode, showing how contingency escape above a few seconds before the final scene told last week.
From the very beginning, comics, especially superhero comics, and the literature of escape, have been a valuable source of inspiration for film (as recently proven) and of course the serial, despite the early years of the genre, did not escape it. Only ten years after its appearance, the first and best known superhero of all the first film version in serial format. Its title was, of course, "Superman" and Kirk Alyn was asked to provide it the first real face to the Man of Steel.
Two years later, in 1950, following the great success achieved by this first serial, was filmed a sequel, which was called "Atom Man vs. Superman." It appears as the hero's nemesis (Again Kirk Alyn) the ultimate nemesis of it, Lex Luthor, played by Lyle Talbot.
After a long-term stay in prison, after Superman has once again thwarted his insane plans, Luthor tries to show the world that his desire is to reform through philanthropic actions, but nothing is further from reality; stra furniture while in public a friendly face, persists in its evil intentions assuming the personality of Man Atom, a curious character, dressed entirely in black and whose face is hidden by a bright and bulky mask.
In each episode, Superman must prevent complex plans Atom Man, surrounded by a loyal group of followers, making use of its inventions and gadgets (which are nothing more than the own Luthor) to threaten both the city of Metropolis and the faithful friends Man of Steel, such as Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen.
faithfully fulfill the usual format of the serial, "Atom Man Vs. Superman" has, besides the elements mentioned earlier in this "post", a simple script and endowed with many inconsistencies, rather, on the other hand ( and as indicated) in a normal product of their characteristics, which if anything gives a greater charm, especially seen in times like those that now live. The serial is straddling the superhero genre in the early years and science-fiction purely naive, so popular in the early years of the fifties, the special effects are simple and rudimentary (it uses animation to scenes of Superman flying, and when flying display devices created by Luthor, Atom Man), and the scheme is still mimetic episodes in all: the villain directs a threat to Metropolis and directed predominantly towards the Daily Planet and its employees (which is true obsession: D), Superman takes action to prevent it, Luthor Strikes to see that your enemy does its objective and directs a new danger to him or to the friends of it, facing the end of the episode, leaving the viewer to disown suspense until the next week, how protagonists manage to get away with it.
After this serial, and the arrival and settlement of television, Superman would happen to the small screen. This time, however, rejected Kirk Alyn getting back into the skin of the Man of Steel, and that role fell to the ill-fated George Reeves. Noel Neill, who played the intrepid Lois Lane in both serial, it would repeat such a role for the series.
"Atom Man vs. Superman" inevitably takes us back in time s simple and gullible. Has, as a product of its characteristics, a genuine charm that is difficult and impossible to find in today's achievements. It is evident that has become outdated by the time and progress relentlessly, but at the same time it is undeniable that, for all lovers of retro, as is the case the author of these lines, has a stale taste appeal, but still in force and insurmountable as it tends to occur at any time serial, and therefore precisely not disappoint, despite not having even remotely, with the budget nor the recent nonsense film technologies, which, Contrary to what happens with this serial and its derivatives, do fall quickly into oblivion.
